Our mission is to educate physicians and the public about Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses, to be a resource center for patients with these diseases and their families, and to provide a network of support for the same. We also support medical research on tick-borne diseases.

All donations to the Texas Lyme Disease Association are tax-deductible and will be used solely for the educational and research purposes allowed us by the U. S. Internal Revenue Service.

TXLDA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Harriett Bishop

HARRIET BISHOP

PRESIDENT

Harriet holds a B.S. degree from the University of Arizona where she completed her thesis, a time and motion study, during a Teaching Fellowship in the Graduate School.  Awarded membership in Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honorary, she continued her studies at the Graduate School of Wayne State University.  She retired from the Texas Department of Health in 1986 where she had been employed as a Medical Social Worker nearly 17 years.

This mother of 5, grandmother of 14 and great-grandmother of 2, is very active in Lyme disease advocacy, writing articles and speaking to civic groups.  Though she had a bulls-eye rash as a small child and lifelong debilitating symptoms, her Lyme disease remained undiagnosed and untreated for over 75 years! Since receiving proper treatment, she now enjoys kayaking on the Guadalupe River with her family.

Susan Williams

SUSAN WILLIAMS

VICE PRESIDENT OF EDUCATION/OUTREACH

Susan Williams became interested in Lyme disease after she and members of her family contracted the illness and encountered incredible difficulty in the medical community when they tried to obtain proper diagnosis and treatment.   She currently serves as Developmental Director of The National Lyme Disease Memorial Park Project.

Utilizing her B.S. degree in Community Health Education, she is a frequent contributor to the Public Health Alert, an integrative health publication on chronic illnesses.  She lives in Kyle, TX with her husband and four children.

David Kocurek

J. DAVID KOCUREK Ph.D

TREASURER

David earned B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M. His focus is on aerodynamics and performance of rotary-wing aircraft, and he has worked in broad areas ranging from basic research though company formation and management. He is published internationally, including invited papers, and also served on the oversight NASA Subcommittee on Aerodynamics. Community service includes holding elected office in a North American charity for funding children’s hospitals. He also performed with several music ensembles which played for civic events, social groups and church services until prohibited by the progression of undiagnosed Lyme disease. Plagued by recurring and remitting health issues for years, he turned his own research skills to the dilemma resulting in clinical diagnosis supported by test in 2005 of Lyme and co-infections. These most likely occurred in the mid-1950s as a young child at the family’s rural home site in coastal Texas.  David’s experience has caused him to take a strong position for education of the public and medical community about Lyme disease in Texas and to advocate for patient access to progressive standards of diagnostic and treatment care.

Pat Ricks

PATRICIA W. B. RICKS

SECRETARY

Patricia Ricks has a B.A. from Rice University, Houston, with a masters degree from the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, AZ. Formerly in international commercial banking in Chicago, she is the published author of thirteen books and is the owner/publisher of Pemberley Press, a small publishing company founded in 2001. She served on the board of the Texas Lyme Coalition and testified at hearings held by the Texas Senate Committee on Administration to investigate issues related to tick-borne diseases in Texas. Along with other members of the TLC, she formed the Texas Lyme Disease Association and obtained its 501(c)(3) status to affiliate with the national LDA. She also owns and moderates an online support and education group, txlyme@yahoogroups.

Annmarie Mikelski

ANNMARIE MIKELSKI

DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY

Annmarie (AM) is TXLDA's "techie" who works behind the scenes on the org's website and publications, and designs graphics for our Cafe Press Store. She is a retired National Park Ranger whose interest in Lyme disease began when she was working at Cape Cod, MA in the mid 80s. A tiny tick bit her forehead and left a rash. The MDs there misdiagnosed her, and she went on feeling ill for over 20 years. Of all the parks AM worked at, in many different states, there were no MDs or specialists in the surrounding towns/cities who could find out what was ailing her - until she moved to Texas. In 2003, a Nurse Practitioner asked her if she'd ever been tested for Lyme, she tested positive, and finally got her diagnosis of Chronic, Late Lyme disease. AM is still being treated, and will probably be dealing with this debilitating disease for life.

Teresa Lucher

TERESA LUCHER

SUPPORT GOUP ADVOCATE

Teresa Lucher became interested in Lyme disease after finally obtaining a diagnosis for her numerous health problems. She had Lyme and Co-infections for 28yrs before she found the true cause of her suffering eight years ago.  She is the Founder and Leader of the Houston Lyme Support Group, which was established in 2004. They meet the second Sat of each month at the Kindred Hospital 3-5pm (cafeteria). She can be contacted at  lucher@sbcglobal.net .

Teesa also has been instrumental in establishing the Austin, South Texas and Clear Lake Lyme Support Groups. She is a tireless patient advocate, and her passion to educate the public about Lyme/TBDs has made her the primary contact for the Houston area for anyone looking for information and support.  She lives on the West side of Houston with her husband of 18yrs.  She has a 29 year old son who is recently married and lives less than a mile away, which makes her very happy. Her son has been a member of the CyFair VFD for 10 yrs.

Brian Thigpen TXLDA

BRIAN THIGPEN

VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT

Brian Thigpen holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M
University. After graduating and moving back to Houston, as a long-time
mountain biker, he became a member of the Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association (GHORBA), first acting as a Memorial Park Trail Steward. In 2005, he became the Race Director for GHORBA under the condition that GHORBA would help sponsor the nation's first ever Lyme disease ride (Lyme Ryde).

Lyme disease is an issue close to his heart as he, his wife, and many of his
friends have been affected by it. In November 2007, with the support of many friends, family, and members of GHORBA, the first Lyme Ryde was held in Smithville, Texas, as a simple mountain-biking event with plenty of fun activities to go around. Now, as recently elected VP for TXLDA he is
planning a "Lyme Disease Ticknic" picnic in Houston near the Texas Medical
Center (TMC), the world's largest medical center complex.
