J. DAVID KOCUREK Ph.D |
TREASURER
David earned B.S., M.S. and
Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M. His focus is
on aerodynamics and performance of rotary-wing aircraft, and he has
worked in broad areas ranging from basic research though company
formation and management. He is published internationally,
including invited papers, and also served on the oversight NASA
Subcommittee on Aerodynamics. Community service includes holding
elected office in a North American charity for funding children’s
hospitals. He also performed with several music ensembles which
played for civic events, social groups and church services until
prohibited by the progression of undiagnosed Lyme
disease. Plagued by recurring and remitting health issues for
years, he turned his own research skills to the dilemma resulting in
clinical diagnosis supported by test in 2005 of Lyme and
co-infections. These most likely occurred in the mid-1950s as a
young child at the family’s rural home site in coastal Texas.
David’s experience has caused him to take a strong position for
education of the public and medical community about Lyme disease in
Texas and to advocate for patient access to progressive standards of
diagnostic and treatment care. |

ANNMARIE MIKELSKI |
DIRECTOR OF
TECHNOLOGY
Annmarie (AM) is TXLDA's
"techie" who works behind the scenes on the org's website and
publications, and designs graphics for our Cafe Press Store. She is
a retired National Park Ranger whose interest in Lyme disease began
when she was working at Cape Cod, MA in the mid 80s. A tiny tick bit
her forehead and left a rash. The MDs there misdiagnosed her, and
she went on feeling ill for over 20 years. Of all the parks AM
worked at, in many different states, there were no MDs or
specialists in the surrounding towns/cities who could find out what
was ailing her - until she moved to Texas. In 2003, a Nurse
Practitioner asked her if she'd ever been tested for Lyme, she
tested positive, and finally got her diagnosis of Chronic, Late Lyme
disease. AM is still being treated, and will probably be dealing
with this debilitating disease for life. |

BRIAN THIGPEN |
VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT
Brian Thigpen holds a
BS in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University. After
graduating and moving back to Houston, as a long-time mountain
biker, he became a member of the Greater Houston Off-Road Biking
Association (GHORBA), first acting as a Memorial Park Trail Steward.
In 2005, he became the Race Director for GHORBA under the condition
that GHORBA would help sponsor the nation's first ever Lyme disease
ride (Lyme Ryde).
Lyme disease is an issue close to his heart
as he, his wife, and many of his friends have been affected by
it. In November 2007, with the support of many friends, family, and
members of GHORBA, the first Lyme Ryde was held in Smithville,
Texas, as a simple mountain-biking event with plenty of fun
activities to go around. Now, as recently elected VP for TXLDA he
is planning a "Lyme Disease Ticknic" picnic in Houston near the
Texas Medical Center (TMC), the world's largest medical center
complex.
